PROM, PART 2

Because he can't stop himself from making a movie reference, the theme of this year's Prom is "Enchantment Under the Sea". (Don't get too freaked out, Marty McFly.) Equipment has been moved out, seating has been set near tables and walls, and a makeshift stage has been constructed to host the DJing equipment. Quinn has music up until 2010, so a large variety of music will get played. There's plenty of food and drinks - including spiked, and very-much-not-spiked punch (magically protected, thanks to Ilsa). In a corner is a small set up for people who wish to get their photos taken by Tsukasa.

The party is under way - have yourselves a good time, Mayfield!

[Being called "kid" definitely gets his attention; he's been around for ten thousand years, after all. He turns to look at Mika, looking a little defensive as he does so.]

I've just never been to an event this big, that's all. It's a little much.

[Wait...does he recognize that voice? The music makes it hard to tell...only one way to find out.]

...Mika?

You get used to crowds after a while, especially in big towns. The noise can be a bit much, though.

[She cocks her head trying to wonder why he seems familiar, then it suddenly dawns on her that she knows that voice and she points at him.]

Ah! Hajime!

[Her tail wags as she actually pushes away from the wall and walks over to meet him. Her limp doesn't seem to be too bad this evening, and she offers him a gloved hand.]

Nice to see you again. You do photography?

It's not the noise as much as it is the sheer amount of people that bother me...

[And yes, it is her! He smiles, though it's kind of a shy one. Like he's not used to smiling much.]

It's definitely good to be meeting under better circumstances. I'm glad to see you're doing well.

[He nods.]

Back home, when I wasn't fighting monsters, I was a freelance photographer. I figured I'd try getting a bit of work in tonight.

[wolfishsurvivalist]

[She reaches up to scratch behind one of her ears, looking a little sheepish.]

Yeah, not going to lie it took a while for me to get used to again too, in small doses it's not too bad. I'm doing well enough, it's certainly one of my better days.

That sounds really exciting, will you be sharing your shots once they're developed?

[chalicejoker]

Ah, it's good you're feeling that way, then. It would've been a shame to have to have missed this.

[He kind of shrugs.]

I suppose I should, although I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Working the prom wasn't really my idea.

[Hajime gestures to the area Tsukasa's got set up for pictures.]

Tsukasa called and asked if I'd be interested in providing a bit of backup. I figure he's got something in mind for all of these pictures, although I'll provide copies to those that want them.

It's not the first time I've been to prom, you know.

[She smiles, trying to keep her expression upbeat.]

Ahh, so you got wrangled in, then. Well, it doesn't hurt to get out of the house sometimes, and maybe somebody will end up asking you to dance or something. Might just end up being a fun evening, you know? Either way, I hope things go well.

[chalicejoker]

Ah, it's definitely my first prom. Very much outside my realm of expertise.

[He looks a little sheepish.]

I...don't think I'm much of a dancer. But I'll try to have a good time. I hope your night goes well, too.

[wolfishsurvivalist]

All the more reason to try to have a good time and enjoy it.

[She huffs, her tail wagging a little before it droops.]

I'm not either, but hey, it's not like anyone's going to notice in this crowd, right?

But thanks.

[Her smile isn't quite as cheerful as it could be, but she's ducking her head to try an hide it, disguising the gesture by combing her bangs out of her eyes with her claws.]

[Uh-oh. He said the wrong thing there. Open mouth, insert foot.]

I'm sorry, that was...insensitive of me.

[He's awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. So awkward.]

If...you wanted to try to dance, we could...work something out. I'm pretty strong. I could help you support your weight. Like you said, no one's going to notice.

[wolfishsurvivalist]

No, it's fine, I just...

[She scratches awkwardly behind an ear.]

I've never been good at these stupid things. A-and you don't have to if you don't really want to.

[Her laugh is nervous and embarrassed, but her tail wags a little anyway at the offer.]

I've never been asked to dance before tonight. It's stupid, huh?

[chalicejoker]

No, if you want to, we can try it.

[He's looking a little awkward, too.]

It's not stupid. I've...never asked anyone to dance before tonight, either.

[wolfishsurvivalist]

O-okay.

[Her hands twist in the lace of her dress, and she seems to be caught staring at her toes while her tail began wagging enthusiastically.]

I mean, if you really don't mind dancing with me...

[chalicejoker]

No, of course I don't mind. Hold on, let me dump the camera so it won't get in the way.

[He darts off to ditch the camera with the other photography supplies, but it's only about 10 feet away. He returns holding an arm out for her to take. He is also attempting a reassuring smile, but it's a bit of a nervous one.]

You ready?

[wolfishsurvivalist]

[It gives her time to compose herself, smoothing out the front of her dress and reaching up to make sure her hair is still in place. She hasn't been this nervous in a long time, and returns his smile with a nervous one of her own.]

Ready as I'll ever be.

[Linking her arm with his, her tail began to wag more, and she ducked her head to scratch her cheek. Honestly, she was a bit old to be blushing about something like this.]

[Hajime leads her out onto the dance floor, careful to keep a pace she can keep up with. He's feeling remarkably nervous about this himself, which is...not exactly what he was expecting. Rampaging monster? He's got that. Taking someone out to dance? It's a different story.

And now that they're out there, he's going to start dancing, somewhat awkwardly. He's light on his feet, but he clearly doesn't know any of these dance moves well at all. Anything he knows, he's learned it from watching other people dance tonight. He's also being quite careful to offer Mika support as needed.]

...I really hope I'm doing this right...

[wolfishsurvivalist]

[She tries not to lean on him too much, especially since she isn't a good dancer on her own and she doesn't want to be a dead weight. Yet her mood seems to be improving, as she relaxes a little and her tail wags happily.]

I wouldn't be able to tell you if you were or not! Thanks again, Hajime.

[Because even as awkward as they both are, she's still having more fun than she had when she'd been lurking by the wall.]

You're welcome. I'm glad we could do this.

[Because, yes, they're both terribly awkward, but this is a brand new experience for him. He's enjoying it.]

[Her smile is much more natural now as she eases into it.]

You know, I honestly can't remember the last time I've danced.

[chalicejoker]

I know I haven't before. It's not something I ever thought I'd do, honestly. It's...nice.

[He's starting to relax as well.]

Not ever? How sad! I just usually do it by myself. It can be a lot of fun, I used to really enjoy it.

[chalicejoker]

Fun and I just haven't been well-acquainted for very long...but I can see how this would be enjoyable.

[wolfishsurvivalist]

I can understand. Fun...isn't something I've been able to have for a very long time.

[For a moment her gaze is distant, then she looks up at him with a small smile.]

Maybe we can learn together?

[chalicejoker]

[Really, the idea that anyone would want to hang around him and his moody, socially awkward self is still somewhat of a new one...as is the idea of wanting to reciprocate that sort of thing. He returns her small smile with one of his own.]

We could do that.

Only if you don't mind putting up with me, that is.

[She laughs a little at that, ducking her head as her tail wags.]

I'm not worried about that--I can guarantee you I'm worse.
