Yesterday's just a memory, tomorrow is never what it's supposed to be. [CLOSED]
Who: The Witch Marisa Kirisame and The Tsundere Rin Tosaka
When: 3/11 - sunset
Where: The Highway
What: High level magic goes wrong because Mayfield sucks. (mod-approved consequences)
Warnings: magic ritual, explosions, foul language, possible blood and/or sexual innuendo
The highway probably seemed at first like an odd place to work high level magic, but Marisa had chosen it for two reasons. The first was that it was away from the town, creating a reasonable distance between the site of the spell and all the other magic users and influences in Mayfield proper. The second reason was that it wasn't Makeout Point. That would have been the witch's first choice of location, but she knew enough people ventured up there that the solitude and privacy needed for this spell wouldn't be achieved.
So, down one of the bends that took Mayfield proper from view, Marisa continued her preparations as she awaited Rin's arrival. No cars came down the highway - she'd staked it out for a few days to confirm - so Marisa set up the spell in the middle of the road. She first cleaned the section of the road with fire, conjuring a small conflagration to scorch the surface before removing the soot left behind, before setting her pack down to get her materials ready.
A large stick of dried sage was lit, allowing the witch to clear the air and drive whatever weak spirits might be lingering about away. The scent was comforting and helped Marisa focus her mind. Once she'd walked the entire area the spell would take place, she set the still burning bundle down near the center of the circular area she's scorched. With that done, she took out a stoppered flask containing a silvery liquid. Opening the flask, she poured the quicksilver into a hand and then used it to draw a reflective line about the scorched ground, creating a silvery circle. She didn't close it, leaving a space open facing the direction Rin would approach from, and stoppered the flask once again after using magic to clean most of the mercury from her hand.
Next came two vials of powder - one yellow and one grey - and she moved to each cardinal point in the ritual space. It had been a while since she'd worked with such high level magic that wasn't directly linked with blowing things up, so she was set on making sure the preparations would be thorough and she would be careful to not mess any of it up. So she murmured incantations as she sprinkled the powder from both vials over each cardinal point, magically setting seals into the ground.
To the North, the direction facing Mayfield proper, she placed the Sixth Pentacle of the Sun.
To the South, she placed the Second Pentacle of Mercury.
To the East, she placed the Third Pentacle of Saturn.
To the West, she placed the Fourth Pentacle of Mercury.
They briefly glowed a muted blueish-white before burning themselves into the road's surface and going dark. Somewhat visible as black in the fading light, the four seals went dormant, waiting for the time when the witch would call them. With that done, she had one thing left to do before she would be ready. Moving to the very center of the space, she knelt down and placed her hand to the ground. Eyes closed, she murmured more words of magic and set one last seal into the ground with neither powder being used - just her raw magic. With a flash of that same blueish-white light, the Seventh Pentacle of the Sun flared into life and then died down just as the others had with dormant magic, waiting for the time when it'd been released.
With a sigh and a wipe of the sweat on her brow, the witch wafted the smoke from the burning sage over her, clearing herself of the residual magic. Leaving it burning, Marisa stood and walked to the north before the open end of her circle and waited for Rin. The sun was setting...

There's a backpack slouched over her shoulders as she walks, the red coat long shoved in there shortly after she began her walk. The sleeve drapes out, a reminder that the weather was picking up just a bit in Mayfield. Her traditional clothing, red and black, were worn and one might even question just how she could walk such a distance in those shoes. It would have been all too easy to get Lancer to come out and drop her off within seconds. Yet, she would have had to deal with his non-stop questioning.
It was better her pup was left at home.
Following behind her is a black cat with split tails though, which stops well enough before reaching any barriers. It knew better than to approach, Ruby being quite the intelligent one, but she was there just as additional security. Maybe more emotional than anything as Rin pauses to regard the creature one more time, before breaking off into a sprint.
She'll stop once she makes it towards Marisa, a hand on her chest as she tries to regulate her breathing. That was important and while she tried every day to practice such a skill, breathing in the mana provided by the air was a necessary aid to the nature interference of most magical spells, but one that took many years to learn. Rin found it humorous really to keep herself entertained with such basics that could rarely be mastered by magi, but all the same it gave her a reason to not hurry much.
"Hey." Cracking out a smug grin, she'll lift a hand to greet the golden-haired witch, choosing to not pay attention to the setup just yet. "Didn't keep you waiting for long, did I?"
no subject
"You're just in time, ze. I finished preparations just a bit ago." She took a step back and gestured to the ground before her. "Come into the circle when you're ready so I can close it and get the first barrier up."
no subject
Pausing, she'll reach into a side pocket of the backpack to withdraw a pair of glasses, unfolding them with a simple flick before fully placing them on her face. It wasn't that she really needed them, but they helped her concentrate better. Thankfully she found a pair in the Mayfield General Store that she adapted better to suit her needs. They were nothing like the ones she had at home, but they still helped significantly. Now it was time to glance at what she could make out.
The Sixth Pentacle of the Sun passed by her standards and was ideal. Not only that, she did receive proper warning that such seals were going into place here. The Second Pentacle of Mercury though was an interesting choice, especially since Rin was under the firm belief that everything she wanted was acquired by her own hands and not through that type of element. If they were going to ask the impossible though, it wouldn't hurt. A thorough assessment of the other three gave her the confidence that Marisa was not only skilled, but in touch with harmony in the magical realm.
"This looks really good. It's almost as though I prepared it myself." Even when working alongside someone, Rin's ego never took a break. "Do you have a plan for me or should I just improvise?"

"You and I have been practicing magic for about the same length of time, ze. You think I accept anything but the best?" She then waved her hand to stay any flirtatious banter back and answered the question of import.
"What I expect from you is two things. Once I get the first barrier up, to create a concealing curtain to keep everyone out there unaware of the level of magic we'll be displaying, is to place the second barrier up to keep the magic we use inside the circle. When I start using high level magic, I have to access a lot of mana. My body isn't like yours, ze. I wasn't born with anything to help contain the mana inside me. So, I tend to leak a lot of mana when working with these levels. Normally it's harmless, but better safe than sorry."
It sucked, but it was the truth. Marisa was one hundred percent completely ordinary human. "And then you need to set yourself up as a tether, as an anchor, for me to connect with. How you do that is up to you, but remember that my magic comes from without, not within. If I try drawing from within, I put myself in danger of transitioning."
no subject
Just a bit.Even if she wants to suggest a simple solution like the ribbons she wore in her hair, it was easier to be relied on like this. Besides, if something were to go around, Rin can do what she could to manipulate the unleashed mana."Right, especially with such a sensitive spell at hand here." Who knows what excess mana might do. Attract spirits and those keen to the magical realm for sure, but she's suitable enough with a temporary bounded field. "The last thing we want is to advertise we're up for business after all."
The latter part was the one that needs careful consideration. Their form of magic varied enough to be dangerous. "What kind of connection are we speaking of?" Better safe than sorry by asking a question she should already know the answer to.
no subject
She tried to find the right way to explain what she meant to someone that's never had this direct of contact with her magic. If this was Patchouli or even Alice, Marisa wouldn't have to explain anything given she's synced with both of them before.
"The best way to describe the kind of connection is to think of the spell as a deep pool of primordial goo. What I'm doing is diving into this pool and trying to reach the memories at the bottom of it. You are the rope I tie about my waist so I know where the surface is at all times and, in the case I end up sparking out, I can use you as a means of recovery," Marisa explained.
She then held her hands out in front of her. In one hand a blue flame appears. In the other a red flame. She then brought both hands together. The blue flame glowed brighter and a moment later, the red flame flattened a bit and then partially surrounded the blue flame. Where the two met, there was a thin, bright layer of purple flame, but other than that, the two were distinctive different bodies of flame.
The witch raised her eyebrow to see if Rin grasped what she meant.

"That close of a connection... Are you sure you want to take that risk?" After all, if they were that intimate, there's the chance Marisa would see Rin's entire life, including everything in Mayfield. "If you do, you can't tease me!"
no subject
Those words were spoken quietly and with an honesty Marisa didn't often show. The two flames dissipated and she idly fiddled with her braid. She didn't quite understand what Rin was telling her not to tease her about since the spell wasn't meant for them to share memories and she wasn't aware of the side effects of that kind of connection from Rin's type of magic. Marisa's was external, so she never really had to deal with that kind of thing before. At least not unless it was by choice.
no subject
It was awkward enough as it was, Rin decided, so there was no need to draw it out more. If it happened (the likelihood being that it would), then Marisa would understand her words. Even if she didn't bully her into agreeing, she could settle for this much.
no subject
"Right." Marisa grabbed the flask with the remaining mercury in it and then looked Rin directly in the eyes. "I invite you into this circle, Rin Tohsaka."
no subject
Not that she really needed to be cautious since Marisa made the proper arrangements. "Let's get this started." There's no hesitation once she's there, the confident smirk spreading along her face as she held up her arm.

Once Rin was inside, Marisa unstoppered the flask and used the last of the mercury to close the opening, creating one solid ring of silver about them. Once closed, there was a brief low hum as the first step of Marisa's barrier went into affect. It was the base for everything, creating the circle to be a space for magic. She then picked up the burning bit of sage, breathed in some of the smoke before handing it to Rin with a "Cleanse yourself while I set the barrier."
The witch then walked to the northern end and stood before the Sixth Pentacle of the Sun. Flexing her fingers, she raised her hands before her and grasped a hold of the mana surrounding her. A blueish-white magic circle formed underneath her, the twelve symbols of the Greek Zodiac set inside the outer edge. An incantation in Latin was spoken under Marisa's breath as she build the barrier on the metaphysical plane. As she continued, the circle underneath her started to pulse and the mana inside the circle that wasn't being used by Rin seemed to converge on the witch.
She needed to build two sides of the barrier - the inside to keep their magic from being detectable and the outside to keep those with remote sensing abilities to overlook the location. If she created a dead zone, it'd draw people faster than if they were doing this openly. So this was a complex barrier that took time to make if she wanted it to be right. And it was almost done.
The Pentacle took on a muted golden glow that grew in intensity the more Marisa built the barrier. When she had it right, she shifted it from the metaphysical plane to theirs and magic suddenly washed with an almost frightening speed over the ritual area, visually creating a blueish-white dome over them before visually disappearing. The barrier was there, for the Pentacle was still glowing that muted gold.
There. Now it was just her and Rin with no prying eyes. She turned then and walked back to the center where the other girl was.

A surprise indeed. With a nod to the other to show she understood just what she meant, she'll take the bit to breathe in herself.Yes, it was only a matter of time before she would have to unlock herself fully to the witch. Such a thought was frightening, overwhelmingly so, but Rin Tohsaka was capable of steeling her emotions.
Rin takes note of the Latin incantation and while it's not the language she would choose, it was one she was familiar enough with. After all, one that was accomplished in sorcery should be well-versed in all languages that touch it. Incantations in Japanese weren't as effective as the ones in German, so naturally she used that language herself. That and she secretly enjoyed just how bold the words spoken were, German being rougher than the more delicate Latin.
If she weren't too busy focusing on cleansing herself, she might have commented on Marisa's craftsmanship. Once approached, she'll give a half smile, still fully alert of the situation around them.
"Ready then?"
no subject
"The circle's yours," Marisa replied with a nod, rolling her shoulders a little.

Using it effectively though was another story. Within this kind of barrier, Rin's circuits were locked off primarily to him, a magical prison meant to contain all of the supernatural inside. Since Rin is in a perpetual state of the supernatural, it's only logical that she may not be easily picked up by outside sources. Were any of her guardians magically adept, this sort of thing might have sent up warning flags.
Rin knows she's burned the bridges of those who were and anyone else would leave her to her own devices. Even if she's a bit apprehensive about Marisa, what harm would this serve? If she were to become someone's familiar or chained to them spiritually, a simple death in this town would reset it. In short, if Marisa were to try to imprison Rin, a Command Mantra would set her free.
Although it would be the second time she's commanded her Servant to slay her. Thinking back on it, that would be cruel since they were now boyfriend and girlfriend. Was that a term she could even associate with a heroic spirit? Realizing that she's quickly losing sight of what's important, she shakes her head as though to dispel the distracting thought.
"Of course it is." Flexing her fingers, she'll approach it. "Need me to set up the second barrier or do you plan to hog all of the action to yourself?" After all, it might send the wrong message if she anticipated that Marisa wasn't capable of containing her own mana. A barrier from another might be harder to contain, but challenges were all she lived for in this boring town.
no subject
"The second barrier is to be yours." She chuckled. "Go on, ze. Show off. I know you want to." And layering the barriers with varying magics would make it stronger.
now that i slept for forever!!
But Marisa's one of the very few who's seen her at her weakest point. Not even Hakuno was allowed to see Rin as a pile of flesh and gears - Hakuno being one of the very few people Rin would consider a true friend. So wasn't Marisa something closer to the magus even if she denies it herself?
"Now why would I want to show off?" Rin will tease her as she turns to face Marisa with the slight tug of a smirk along her face. "I'll just do what is necessary and then some." A secondary boundary to contain all all mana flowing within the atmosphere and any that the other girl may leak. With her warning in mind, she'll have to set up a stronger bounded field than the ones before. Without using charged gemstones either.
Surely such a thing would cost her a bit, but if she simplified a way to reuse the mana around them instead of sacrificing her own od. No, that force was what Marisa will need to keep herself chained to this realm. The small challenge kept her thoughts entertained as she chose her incantations carefully in German, adding in additional lines to a classic chant to further support her.
Although, she can't help but worry about something going wrong. Against her better judgment, she'll prepare her body for the familiarity of a knife stab, hardly flinching when she opens up the circuits within her body. Even though she has more than enough units to accommodate the witch as well as her Servant, she'll still be wary about unlocking the sub-circuits found within her body. Those will be reserved for an emergency, she's decided mid-incantation, as she keeps her voice loud and without skip. Even if she was capable of producing 500 units of prana, her body doesn't allow access to them so easily. Even if she was willing, there are some circuits that will only open when the body's in danger of death or when she's sexually stimulated. A ten-line incantation takes a magus at least a minute of pure concentration, but it makes for a highly-effective barrier around the area, falling deep underneath their feet and high enough to keep the containment (should there be a lot) from overwhelming the pair. Yet, it was fit inside the confines of the witch's barrier, keeping it well hidden.
When done, she lowers the glowing arm, green circuitry still active as a means of keeping it in place. There was no real physical source she felt trusted in, so she'll use her precious family's heirloom to keep it active. It shouldn't take too long, she suspects, and even if did, there was enough excess. She would just have to ultimately harm herself or trick her mind into believing it was at a state of near death.
"See, no showing off." Rin will laugh and hope she doesn't find any insult in not drawing a circle of her own, nor drawing from Marisa's own. This was the power of an Average one, a magus capable of manipulating all of the elements to use within their own body. So long as the terms were right, Rin could draw in Marisa's mana and transform it through her circuits to use for a spell - whether it be to reinforce the bounded field or aid Marisa in a time of trouble.

Marisa took in the incantation Rin used, the green lines glowing on her forearm, and the way the mana moved in the circle. She might not be able to use internal sources of mana like Rin, but she could feel it, sense it. Analyze it. This was one of the real strengths of Marisa Kirisame - being able to take someone else's magic, someone else's spells, and adapt them to something she can use. She was called a thief for many reasons, but the witch thought this one was more genius than thievery.
But what Rin just did was too complicated for the witch to take in an adapt. She'd need to write some stuff down, make a few notes at the very least, and she had other things to do. More important things to do. And her German was crap.
"So you say," Marisa murmured.
She walked over to the south and stood before Second Pentacle of Mercury between it and the center symbol. Reaching into her pockets, she fished out the two vials with the remaining yellow powder and the grey powder. She opened the vials poured what was left into her palms, the yellow - sulfur - in one hand and the grey - arsenic - in the other. Holding them up before her, she muttered another incantation, an request of sorts to the heavens - and not any god, but the heavens themselves for Marisa specialized in celestial magic - to pierce the veil of the mind and see through the thick magics of Mayfield. To connect back with herself once more.
The three pentacles still along the edges of the circles glowed a muted yellow as the powders in Marisa's hands ignited. The mana inside the barrier became to swirl about them like a great wind, moving faster and faster as the witch bent more of it to her will. She grit her teeth against the slight burning sensation on her palms but know the components would be consumed before she suffered any real damage.
There. The flames died and the whirlwind of mana became less erratic, the three pentacles still glowing that muted glow like the first one did. The mana then drove straight down into the ground with the final word of Marisa's incantation, and a Seal of Solomon formed in the entirety of the circle and the lines of it didn't touch anything already in there. Not even the witch or Rin.
Marisa looked over at Rin with faintly glowing gold eyes easily noticed in the darkness now that the sun had fallen below the horizon leaving the two magic users the light from the glowing seals and themselves as their only form of illumination. And the center pentacle was still dark.
"Now we're ready."
Some mana was flaring off her, butting against Rin's barrier, every few seconds. It wasn't much yet, nothing to be considered dangerous... for now. She gestured to the center seal, the unactivated Seventh Pentacle of the Sun as she fished Mini-Hakkero out. Rin had never seen the small magical furnace before.
sorry for the delay - this cough is killing me
So she doesn't even realize the worth of her own magic. The complexity of spells or the ease the crest she has implanted in her arm makes it. She's seen miracles that should be impossible in her own world, some of which were by her own hands, but still she underplays herself. Sure she holds an air of confidence, but deep down she's always trying to better herself.
With great interest she watches Marisa, making the witch her primary focus in all of this. Taking note of the call to the heavens, she doesn't comment on it. No, that's something to tuck away and recollect for later. One can tell a lot from another magic user in their tools and incantations, so don't mind the studying this magus is enaging in.
The smell of sulfur was strong in the air and made her face wrinkle up in disgust. Think she might be used to it by now, but boy was it enough to make her stomach knot up. Bringing a hand to pinch her nose in disgust, she'll wait until the smell dissipates in the air around them, choosing quite the distraction in the mean time.
"What's that?"
A magical artifact? A strange tool she's never seen and one she better familiarize herself with quick. Were it to be used and something terrible were to happen, Rin wouldn't want to decimate something the woman was fond of.
No worries.
"It's an artifact of sorts, but just consider it my focus."
Every magic user had a focus of some sort for their more powerful spells. At least that was how things were in Gensokyo. Marisa considered those gemstones to be Rin's focus. In a way, the little furnace and the charged stones were quite similar, but different enough that they probably shouldn't be compared.
no subject
With an understanding nod, she chooses to not pry further than that. Many magi had different focuses and for Rin, it was mostly the bundle of nerves that were locked away within her body. Using other items like gemstones weren't unheard of, but to rely on them would be a joke. Especially since she's lost a fair amount of them due to Gilgamesh going off and leaving.
"It's interesting, but nothing I'd want. You can stop with the strange look." She means to tease, judging by the tone in which she speaks, but she's notorious for making dumb mistakes. Realizing afterwards that she probably shouldn't have said that, she waves a hand. "I've got my own."
no subject
"...alright."
Marisa tossed the stone up into the air and caught it, repeating the motion out of a bit of boredom. She couldn't do anything more until Rin set herself up as an anchor, and she had no idea how the magus was going to do that - magically speaking. She knew they'd be sitting by the center pentacle - which she walks over to - and there would be a decent amount of physical contact, but Marisa needed Rin to set herself before she synchronized with her.
