[one would think Charles learned his lesson about monitoring his intake of suspicious foods the last time something questionable happened involving them, but nope, that isn't the case at all. someday he will learn, but that day has clearly not come, since there is now an even-younger-looking-than-usual chiropteran roaming around with the other unfortunate band candy'd souls.

at least he has a vague recollection of the town layout this time around, so he doesn't get lost in his attempts to locate familiar faces... he just gets incredibly distracted at the bakery for a while, ambling in the general direction of the Doctor's house only after he's bought himself a bag of snacks. priorities.]

[he looks back to the Doctor with a perplexed expression] Why Charles? Is that some sort of nickname you've given me? That I don't remember...

...No, it's what you've always referred to yourself as.

[He interlaces his fingers, staring thoughtfully.]

But tell me, Carl. Tell me what's the last thing you remember before Mayfield.

[he looks like he's going to argue with that for a moment, since he rather likes his name and wants to know why he's supposedly changed it when he can't remember doing so, but the question catches his attention.] The last thing I remember? [the confusion is replaced by mild surprise as he discovers that it's much easier to recall his memories from home.]

I had just finished the first month at my new boarding school.

...And what did you think of it?

[He shouldn't pry. He knows it. Charles is vulnerable and revealing things he wouldn't dare otherwise.

But he just can't resist.]

[being completely oblivious to the Doctor's internal conflict, he replies almost immediately, tilting his half-empty teacup from side to side.]

It was nice. Things are different in France than what I'm used to, of course, but most of the people I met were very friendly and kind. Oh! And the school itself, it's lovely. European architecture is impressive, isn't it?

You came from Vietnam, yes? Why did you decide to go to school in France?

[Though, he's certainly still fluent in French considering this conversation.]

[his fluency will probably make sense, given his answer]

It's what my mother and father wanted for me. Being tutored at home is one thing, but I would never otherwise obtain first-hand experience or understand the culture if I just stayed in Hanoi. Europe is where most success lies right now, isn't it? [a beat] Well, not here.

[Being shoved off to school aware from your parents because they think its best for you? Now he can relate to that. He reaches out to ruffle Charles... er Carl's hair]

Well, I am sure they'd be very proud of you for doing so well.

[he smiles in a fond and uninhibited way at the gesture, before looking a little curious]

Do you think so? I still have a long way to go.

A start's a start! And often, that first step is the most difficult to take.

[thinking this over... and eventually nodding!] That makes sense. It was a little difficult, moving so far away from home. But I think I'll like it in France.

Certainly you will.

France is nice.

Though Britain is better.

You've spent a lot of time there, right? I've heard it's nice... I want to see the rest of Europe one day, and maybe the entire world if I'm fortunate. It seems like it would be a lot of work, though.

Nothing wrong with a little work. Buck up now.

All right. [and he does look a little more cheerful, but his attention seems to get sidetracked by something]

Say, what's the best place you've ever been?

...I dunno. There's plenty of good places about. Depends on what you wanna do. Earth is surprisingly interesting.

[he looks a little surprised, but it fades quickly, as though he had only temporarily forgotten that the Doctor was used to being outside of Earth.]

Don't you ever grow tired of it? Earth, I mean. It must get very boring, if you've already seen so many other things. I don't think I would like to stay on it if I could explore everything else.

It's not just places, it's the people that matter too. It's the people that keep me coming back and wanting more.

The people on Earth? But we're a very small planet, aren't we? There must be much more interesting things out there. [well, at least it's pretty clear that his distaste for humans hadn't just shown up out of nowhere. he had never been comfortable claiming the human race was anything particularly special, even when he was a part of it.]

A very small planet! But size doesn't matter, not really. And considering your ability to be extremely stupid at times, the human race is rather impressive. My best friends are human and they're my favorites in the entire universe.

[he doesn't look very convinced but... well, what would a little human like him know in comparison to a time-travelling alien?]

If you say so... How impressive are we in comparison to the other planets?

Very impressive. Earth is one the most beautiful planets out there. Majestic things happen everyday. You just have to look for them.

If I look very hard, do you think I'll find all of them?

Oh yes, of course. But often you needn't look hard at all. Wonders are in front of you're eyes everyday but you simply don't notice them because you're too busy looking for the things you expect to be wondrous.

[being relatively easy to please at this age, he cheers right up at that.]

That's a wonderful way to look at things.
