Mirror my malady... (Open)
Who: Moony, Padfoot, and any bystanders unfortunate enough to stumble upon them.
What: Remus has been keeping things from Mayfield. Bloodthirsty things, that appear during the full moon.
Where: The forests on the outskirts of town.
When: The night of Sept. 30th.
Warnings: Don't touch the puppy.
Remus knew the signs. After thirteen years of suffering them every single month, it was impossible to mistake them for anything else. It started with an ache, dull and gnawing, in every muscle and every joint, and headache just behind his eyes, all of which gradually built into a cacophony of pain as the full moon drew closer. For three days, his body prepared itself, bracing for the transformation that was never pretty and rarely clean.
He was never more sorry to be right about something. The moment he opened that box, he'd known what was coming, deny it though he might. Though he would have Padfoot with him, and Remus took no insignificant comfort in that. At least he knew no one would get hurt while Padfoot was with him. Moony was almost tame around the dog, and Padfoot knew how to handle him, should they stray too close to unsuspecting bystanders.
That hardly seemed to help the anxiety.
Remus and Sirius had opted to skip classes for the day, making their way instead to the deepest part of the forests at the edge of town. It was safest to stay among the trees. If Moony became too aggressive, blood was easier to hide among the fallen leaves, and small animals were plentiful. Spare clothing was stashed in the low branches of an obvious-looking tree, and as sundown drew nearer, their coats and scarves were tossed there as well. And they waited. Hands clasped, fingers laced, staring up at the turning leaves, they waited.
When the last rays of daylight finally faded, the screams began. Screams which were human at first, as Remus curled into a tight pile on the ground. Screams which turned raw along with the sickening crack of breaking bones. Screams which slowly turned inhuman, agonized and howling. Sirius had seen it before, many times, but that didn't make it easier to watch. Remus' body slowly broke itself from the inside out, reformed into a monstrous shape. Changed, to a massive beast of a wolf; his terrible secret, the bane of his life.
A long bay echoed through the forest, through the town itself; too low and mournful to be either human or animal. For indeed, there was nothing human left of Remus at this point. And with that, Moony tore off into the forest, a massive black hound just at his heels.
The night was theirs now, and Sirius could only hope no one else was fool enough to stumble this far into the forest tonight.
